Over the last couple of years, many families have experienced loss, and many haven't been able to celebrate the lives of loved ones in the way that they might have wanted to.

For Thames Hospice, Christmas is a crucial time for their patients and, sadly, for some, it may be the last Christmas they get to make memories with their loved ones.

Having redesigned their website, whilst in the midst of the pandemic, Thames Hospice asked us to create an online donation platform that brought together the families of patients no longer with us, while also providing a secure method of collecting vital funding which would be used to support current end-of-life patients and their families facing their last Christmas together.

We designed and developed a platform that meant when a donation to the Hospice was made, users had the option to add a personalised message and upload an image onto a virtual Christmas tree which could be seen by anyone.

The design came together relatively quickly. Each element of the houses in the background and every star in the sky was individually placed to help build up layers of scenery. The most challenging part though was making sure that each of the elements worked across all devices and created a seamless user experience on every single visit. We also had to take into account that the tree would need to be used in future years too.

As part of the development phase, we built a custom admin area that allowed two-way data streaming so the team could collect memories while visitors could view the memories simultaneously. The team could also track the value of donations made and the number of attendees who registered for their Light up a Life event. The SVG-based tree and lights meant that the graphics were responsive on all devices and could accommodate 203 lights on the tree, of which over 2,400 memories could be left. By integrating Stripe, monetary donations could be made quickly and securely, and users could declare Gift Aid and leave their memory details through Donorfy CRM integration.

The Light up a Life campaign ran from 13 Oct - 13 Dec 2021, and over that time:

Following the success of last year's campaign, the development team were easily able to update the appeal in time for the 2022 launch.
