It's been a little over a month since I started my role as Digital Marketing Assistant at GEL Studios. It has honestly flown by, and I feel like I've learned so much already!
I wanted to use this blog post to outline my experiences so far, talk about some of the day to day aspects of my role, the challenges I have faced and what I've enjoyed most on the job. TLDR working at GEL Studios has been great so far and I can't wait for what else this role has in store for me.
In case you didn't already know, my name is Max, I'm 24 years old and I started working as a Digital Marketing Assistant for GEL Studios in February 2022. My employment history and educational background aren't very typical for a role such as this. I graduated from the University of Exeter in 2019 with a degree in History and Spanish, since then I have worked as an English Language Teacher in Spain as well as an inbound telesales advisor for a multinational electrical retailer.
So how did you get into marketing (I imagine a lot of you are asking)? I've always had an interest in understanding how businesses function and grow. I decided to harness this curiosity during the various lockdowns of 2020/2021 and started studying for a Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) certificate. My passion grew throughout the course and in late 2021 I decided it was time to put everything I'd learnt into practice and apply for a job in the industry. This eventually led me to GEL and I've not looked back since.
Funnily enough, there isn't a typical day at GEL. We work with a wide client base in a variety of industries. I could be helping to set up PPC Ads for a global tech company in the morning and scheduling a month's worth of social media posts for a sole trader in the afternoon. It really can be that diverse. However, I'd say my typical day to day responsibilities include:
Coincidentally I really enjoy content writing, so pretty much what I'm doing right now. Our clients often operate in very different sectors, which means I could be writing about financial services one day and tips for improving your public speaking the next. What I enjoy about content writing is the research process. I have to investigate a particular topic before writing, to ensure it's up to date, relevant and interesting. This also means finding the right images to enhance the blog, improve its flow and add humour if needed. I learn so many new things while conducting research on topics I'd never even considered before.
While I enjoy doing something new every day, it can also be quite challenging. Arriving at work in the morning not knowing exactly what I might be doing that day can be exciting but also daunting. I'm the type of person that likes to be prepared before I start a task (sometimes over prepared), working at GEL has thrust me into the deep end and really taken me out of my comfort zone in that respect.
Time management is a really important skill to have in both personal and professional environments. Working as a Digital Marketing Assistant at GEL has really brought that home to me. My day to day tasks vary to such a large degree, I can be asked to stop one project and work on another throughout the day. Having strong time management skills has helped me divide my time effectively, allowing me to be more productive, organised and overall less stressed.
This might sound corny and I promise no one is forcing me to say this, but GEL is unlike any company I've ever worked for. Albeit I haven't worked at many organisations in my career so far. It's safe to say GEL operates a really positive organisational culture where you feel comfortable making mistakes but more importantly, encouraged to learn from them. Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming, there's a real family atmosphere around the team.
My one month anniversary passed on the 1st March and I have to say that I cannot remember looking forward to coming in to work this much before. It isn't always easy, but the opportunity to learn so many new skills is why I chose to take this job and it's an experience that has helped me develop both professionally and personally.
