How we helped.

EAL are a specialist skills partner and leading awarding organisation for the engineering, manufacturing and building services engineering industry. With a previous website that was slow, dated and hard to navigate - they were in need of a new website that would strengthen their digital footprint, and we're thrilled to have delivered this project in a collaborative effort with Swindon-based Fluff Software. The collaboration brought a balanced approach; GEL Studios would be leading the discovery and design phases with our expertise in usability and pixel-perfect aesthetics, and Fluff's technical excellence and dedication to innovation would head up the development phase.

As well as a complete change in the website CMS and build approach, significant changes were also needed in the sitemap and information architecture to reflect EAL's vision and create a more user-friendly experience. We undertook and invested heavily into the discovery, which on top of research and analysis, was broken down into dedicated phases for the sitemap, content hierarchy and user journeys - before progressing on to wireframes.

The depths of discovery...

EAL has a diverse portfolio of qualifications, resources and services, and several subject matter experts were included in group workshops throughout the discovery process, to ensure these were all represented correctly. After a deep-dive into Google Analytics and SEO research, we started sitemap discussions and understanding the purpose and goals of required pages, before progressing to user journey mapping and content hierarchy. We looked at the strategic placement and emphasis of content to ensure EAL's value proposition was being clearly communicated, as well as call to actions to aid the user's journey and goals. Low-fidelity wireframes were then created so we could step through the user journey and keep the focus solely on usability and accessibility, before applying brand and style in the design phase.

Design approach: from page to component.

The website uses a component-first administration approach, but the wireframed prototypes and designs focussed on entire pages to ensure visual flow, before working backwards to determine the required components - ensuring at all stages that these components can be reused across the site. The design itself utilised elements from the newly introduced brand guidelines, but we also took the opportunity to enhance and build on the brand identity, ensuring that accessibility was considered in each decision.

Technical excellence from Fluff.

The website is built using Kontent CMS and uses a component-first admin approach. GEL's design team and Fluff's development team worked seamlessly together, to ensure each component was created in a way that provided EAL with the flexibility they required. Fluff oversaw all technical aspects of the project, resulting in a robust and scalable solution that perfectly sets the foundations for EAL's website to continually grow with them.
