When thinking about businesses in general, the initial thought for many people is the bigger the better, right? How many people can we hire? How much money can we make? However, that thinking doesn't always work when it comes to choosing a creative design agency to partner with.
Whether you're in need of website design, graphic design, logo and branding or something else - we're going to explore why size isn't always everything and how you should be considering this when deciding who you work with.
Communication (is key).
Often in larger agencies, the people that actually complete the work have little to no contact with the end client. We've all heard the phrase that "too many cooks can spoil the broth" and this can sometimes be the case in a larger team. For example, an Accounts Manager meets with the new client to find out about a project, this information is then relayed to the Project Manager, who will then brief their creative team - which could be any number of people. Throughout all of this process, there are large margins for error and miscommunication which could cause costly and timely mistakes later on down the line.
However in a smaller agency, a client is often in direct contact with the very person carrying out the work. This obviously helps communication massively and ensures things don't get lost in translation - allowing for a more efficient journey together, resulting in more productivity.
Ownership.
In larger agencies, it's not uncommon for multiple people to be working on multiple projects at once. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it does make it harder to keep track of who is responsible for what. This working approach can also be adopted in smaller agencies too, but with a smaller team and workload, it's much easier for individual members to take ownership of what they are doing. They have a more personal stake and it's only natural for more effort to be poured into the project. This will often result in a greater sense of pride and better end result, as the project isn't being passed around multiple people.
And most importantly... quality, not quantity.
When it comes to taking on work, an agency's approach can vary depending on how long they've been around and the type of work they want to take on. If a smaller agency is established and passed the point of saying "yes" to everything for fear of no work, they will be more mindful about not overloading the team and therefore be more selective in the work they take on.
This can result in slightly longer waiting times, but it means when they do take on work, it's worth the wait - because they are fully focussed on that client. This attitude to taking on the right type of work, rather than taking on all work, results in the agency being fully invested (heads, shoulders, knees and toes!) to make sure they provide you with the best solution to your creative problem. This attitude, is exactly what GEL Studios prides itself on.
